What sort of wedding cake are you having for your wedding? Fruit cake, sponge cake, fancy wedding cake, simple wedding cake? Cupcakes even. Are you buying from a shop like Marks & Spencer (who do very good deals by the way) or buying from a bakery which could cosy you more but at least it will all be done and arranged and delivered for you.
You could even get a friend to make your wedding cake. Pick someone reliable of course and a trial is recommended. Rather than a cake cupcakes for weddings are popular nowadays and alot easier to deal with. No cake stands or over the top decorations.
High street wedding cake
M&S is perhaps the most obvious choice and they do do a good cake and at a good price compared to bakeries.
Gorgeous and for four tiers at about £125 it’s a bargain wedding cake. Make sure you factor in the cost of decorations as well though as fresh flowers in particular can be pricey. You will need a cake stand as well though most wedding venues will let you borrow or hire these. This cake is available in sponge or fruit and you can mix and match the layers.
You could use ribbon or feather boas between the layers to cut the cost or get edible sugar petal flowers or false flowers instead of real.
This classically elegant cake can be ordered in your own combination of tiers. Available in either all butter fruit cake covered in marizpan and soft icing, or all-butter sponge filled with buttercream and raspberry jam and covered in soft icing. Alternatives to wedding cake
More popular and cheaper than a traditional cake are cupcakes for a wedding. You don’t even need to buy specialized wedding cakes for this one. Any that take your fancy can be used and they are easy to make and deal with-ie you only need arrange them on stands that overall they can be more cost effective

All butter sponge filled with buttercream and raspberry jam. Fruit cake with vine fruits, nuts and cherries laced with brandy. You could use a number of these as alternatives to traditional wedding cake as well. Cheese Wedding Cake
A wedding cake with a difference, made from 5 tasty cheeses: Goulds Cheddar, Farmhouse Red Leicester, Farmhouse Double Gloucester, Blacksticks Blue and Ravens Oak Goats Cheese. Contains: Cow’s milk, goat’s milk. This product will keep for at least 2 days from the date of collection. Collect order in 7 days from ordering. Serves 100 and costs £150.
You will need to get the additional decorations being the fruit: grapes and apple. Be careful the apple doesn’t go brown though!
Make your own wedding cake (or get someone to do it for you!)
Really wedding cakes are only basic cakes it’s all the decorating and stacking that make then look complex. If you or someone you know feels confident in the kitchen then give it a go. A trial is recommended beforehand though and make sure you make the cake a day or so in advance.
